treasures from Hawassa

Fool, wonderful fool! I eat this bean dish for breakfast every time I come to Hawassa. So filling and delicious. Costs about 75 cents.

Also, this week's veggie haul.
Happy surprises: kale, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, butternut squash!

Amarech

So proud of Amarech, who completed the Peace Corps Ethiopia Household Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Nutrition program!

Amarech, Health Extension Worker Safaye, and I have been working together since June. She has not only made healthy behavior changes in her household, but has also helped her neighbors to improve their household health. For example, after our session on malnutrition in children, she noticed that a neighbor child looked like she was suffering from marasmus (very low weight for height/age). She counselled the child's mother, accompanied her to the health center and then helped feed the child a protein formula for malnourished children. Amarech also worked with her husband, Burka, to burn, bury or compost their trash, plant a vegetable garden, and more. Today she taught her friends about the critical times for hand-washing while we enjoyed coffee together. Great job, Amarech!

invisible geography

May my mind come alive today to the invisible geography that invites me to new frontiers, to break the dead shell of yesterdays, to risk being disturbed and changed.
