trash burning

One of the families we work with burning their trash after a household lesson on waste water, trash pits and livestock sanitation management.
The plant with the big leaves is the false banana plant called inset - a staple food in the Sidama Zone, where I live. People throw their non-compostable trash in their enset fields and also use food waste and manure to make compost for enset.

soup veggies

Veggies, beautiful veggies from Hawassa! I cut up some carrots, green beans and red bell pepper to cook with soup mix from a care package. Thank you, Kathy Lake!

Today I went to a funeral with 3 Health Extension Workers and a midwife. Afterwards the family served us and a huge crowd of other people milk and wasa with beans and greens.

graduation

Today Ayinalem graduated from the household water, sanitation, hygiene and nutrition program! We gave her a certificate and she taught 3 of her friends about oral rehydration solution and diarrhea in children. Afterwards we had coffee and a snack.

It's been a joy to work with Ayinalem and her husband Biru! I'm so proud of them for all the healthy changes they made in their household, including growing a vegetable garden, improving their latrine and digging a trash pit. They will continue to teach their friends what they learned in the program and improve household health in their community!

Special thanks to Health Extension Worker Tigist who worked with this family every step of the way.
