Grassroots Soccer: facts and myths game

Today in Grassroots Soccer club we talked about facts and myths about HIV. We had 8 students participate, two groups of four, who competed to see who could get the most answers correct. Here they are holding their "fact" or "myth" cards up.

grassroots soccer club lesson

Today in Grassroots Soccer club we talked about avoiding risks to HIV (unprotected sex, older partners, multiple partners, sex and alcohol). Then the students played a game where the risks were represented by cones (other students were lined up behind the camera) and the students kick the ball around the "risks" in a relay race.

training new volunteers

Last week I helped train new Peace Corps Ethiopia Health Volunteers in barrier analysis, working with men in maternal and child health care, and sanitation. With a lot of help from local builders, they built a latrine at a household in their community based training village!

Adanech Asefa, program graduate

So proud of Adanech Asefa who finished our Household Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Nutrition program! Health Extension Worker, Safaye, and I started working with Adanech in July. Since then, Adanech has made many healthy behavior changes. She grew a large and thriving vegetable garden. She built a hand-washing station and refills the water and soap when they run out. Today she taught her friends about diarrhea prevention and treatment, as well as the importance of and maintenance of latrines!

Malawian dogs

These Malawian dogs from the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals were actors in the Netflix-released movie "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind." The movie is based on a true story of a Malawian boy who made a windmill that served as an electricity source for his village. These dogs look so much like Nala - my dog who was adopted by a loving couple in Oakland, CA.
